A theatrical sculptural tableau at Roman God of Fire pairs classical figures with glowing pedestal lights, a richly veined backlit stone panel, candlelight and layered floral arrangements. Designed by Peter Bowden and PETERMAX Co., the Tempe restaurant reinterprets ancient Roman grandeur through immersive hospitality design.
The AZ Insider visits Roman God of Fire, the expansive Italian restaurant near Tempe Town Lake created by Pretty Decent Concepts in collaboration with James Beard Award-winning chef Scott Conant.
The feature credits Peter Bowden of PETERMAX with the restaurant’s intentionally theatrical design. Monumental sculptures, soaring arches, dramatic drapery, Italian stonework, marble-topped tables and warm architectural lighting transform the dining room into an immersive interpretation of ancient Roman grandeur.
The article also explores the narrative connecting Roman God of Fire with Mea Culpa, its hidden cocktail lounge. Conceived around the journey of a Roman soldier and the tension between virtue and vice, the two spaces present contrasting sides of the same story: Roman’s monumental public spectacle and Mea Culpa’s intimate, confessional atmosphere.
