An Underground Cocktail Bar With a Huge Tequila List Is About to Open in Mt. Vernon Triangle
The bar at dLeña ROJA centers on a dramatically illuminated arched display stocked with an extensive collection of tequila, mezcal and other agave spirits. PETERMAX Co. shaped the subterranean lounge through warm walnut, brown leather, sculptural plasterwork and layers of candlelike illumination, creating an intimate counterpoint to dLeña above.
Eater DC previews dLeña ROJA, the underground cocktail lounge beneath dLeña in Washington’s Mt. Vernon Triangle. The bar was conceived as a darker, more intimate companion to the restaurant upstairs, with its own cocktail program, Mexican small plates and an extensive menu of agave spirits.
Designed by PETERMAX Co., the candlelit interior combines walnut-lined walls, brown leather seating, curved banquettes and softly illuminated arches. A sculptural ceiling of closely spaced wood elements leads toward the glowing back bar, while collected books, lamps and objects sourced in Washington, South America and India give the room the atmosphere of a private, well-traveled retreat.
The design also incorporates wall hangings made by eleven artists in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico. Throughout the lounge, handcrafted details and warm, low lighting soften the architecture and reinforce the sense of discovery inherent in descending below the restaurant.
The curved lounge accommodates 50 seated guests or 90 standing. Guests can enter through dLeña or use a separate entrance on Fifth Street NW, giving the subterranean bar an identity of its own while preserving its connection to the restaurant above.
