High design: Phoenix plane bar named most stylish spot in North America

Carry On in Downtown Phoenix, designed by Peter Bowden of PETERMAX Co. and winner of the Best Bar Design Award from North America’s 50 Best Bars.

Carry On Airlines has been named the winner of the Best Bar Design Award from North America’s 50 Best Bars.

Phoenix New Times spotlights Carry On following its recognition by North America’s 50 Best Bars, which named the Downtown Phoenix cocktail experience the winner of its Best Bar Design Award. The publication highlights the immersive interior by Peter Bowden of PETERMAX Co. and the level of detail used to recreate the atmosphere of 1970s air travel.

The feature describes Carry On as a “masterclass in retro-futuristic design,” pointing to an experience that begins with boarding passes and vintage-style uniforms and continues inside with aircraft-inspired architecture, simulated windows, generous seating, and a fully realized 90-minute “flight.” The award specifically recognizes the design for going well beyond a conventional airplane theme to create a convincing and highly detailed hospitality environment.

The recognition adds a major international design honor to Carry On’s growing list of accolades, placing Peter Bowden’s interior design at the center of one of the project’s most significant awards.
