Filthy Animal layers olive-green leather, glossy tile, woven wood, lush planting and oversized animal imagery into an environment that feels both primal and polished. Designed by Peter Bowden and PETERMAX Co., the Tempe restaurant is one of several immersive hospitality concepts created in partnership with Pretty Decent Concepts.
A Taste of AZ profiles Pretty Decent Concepts and its rapid expansion across the Valley, tracing the hospitality group’s evolution from Chico Malo to a growing portfolio that includes Wren & Wolf, Carry On, Drop Dead Gorgeous and Filthy Animal.
The article identifies Peter Bowden as a partner who brings the group’s concepts to life through immersive interiors built from bold contrasts and rich textures. It also recognizes his design of Carry On, named Best Bar Design in North America by North America’s 50 Best Bars.
At Filthy Animal, the design turns the group’s wood-fire cooking concept into a richly layered environment of deep green leather, tropical planting, natural textures and deliberately theatrical animal imagery. Hidden behind the restaurant, Drop Dead Gorgeous shifts into a glowing, disco-era hideaway built around cocktails, music and late-night energy.
The feature also looks ahead to Pretty Decent Concepts’ next collection at downtown Phoenix’s Arizona Center. Cleaverman was conceived as a modern steakhouse with the accumulated character of a long-storied institution; Uppercut as an intimate, 16-seat tasting experience hidden within it; and Filthy Martini as a velvet-draped piano lounge shaped by swank, swagger and a modern interpretation of an earlier era.
Together, the projects demonstrate the shared conviction behind the partnership: a restaurant or bar should offer more than food and drink. Each concept is designed as a complete escape, with its own story, mood and unmistakable identity.
